Old Excelsior Mine 1878 Oskaloosa Weekly Herald November 14, 1878 “Excelsior Coal Co. was organized but shortly proir to their beginning operations in April last, with the following list of officers: Lowery, Pt.Byron,III,President; S.M. Churchill, Geo.Bently, H.C. Rockwell, and W.A. Durfee, Directors; Mr.Lowery is also a Director; Mr.Durfee, who is a director and also Superintendent, comes from the coal fields of Illinois and his experience there has enabled him to build the necessary works here with perfectness and economy.”
